EMILIAN SCHOOL,
FIRST QUARTER OF THE 17TH CENTURY
Portrait of a man, head and shoulders, in a black costume,
before a blue background
oil on copper, oval
9.4 x 7.3 cm.
PROVENANCE
Private collection, UK.
This finely preserved oval portrait on copper exemplifies the cultivated intimacy of Emilian cabinet
painting in the early decades of the Seicento. The sitter is shown bust length against a luminous
blue ground, wearing a sober black garment and small white collar, his youthful features animated
by a questioning and engaging gaze. The delicate modelling of the flesh and subtle highlights
reflect the naturalistic refinement associated with the circle of the Carracci family.
