Further comparison with works reassigned to Novelli’s early period on the basis of archival
evidence, such as the Immaculate Conception in Termini Imerese, dated 1627 (fig. 2), and with the
painting in Livo, from the monumental Madonna delle Grazie in Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo to
Saints Augustine and Nicholas of Tolentino Adoring the Eucharist, also in Palermo,t confirms beyond
doubt that this Annunciation was conceived during the same period as the canvas in Como. Just like
the Como altarpiece, our Annunciation already contains motifs and compositional solutions that
would reappear in later works, including the Saint Rosalia in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna
(fig. 3), and the Holy Spirit with Cherubs, a painting on stone housed in Palazzo Abatellis in Palermo
(fig. 4).u
