Formed from a substantial gold rod evenly twisted into a continuous helical strand, the torc tapers
to simple hooked terminals, allowing it to fasten seamlessly at the neck. The restrained purity of

ROMAN, 2ND - 3RD CENTURY A.D.
Massive ring
gold, with banded agate
35g weight
PROVENANCE
Oliver Reginald Hoare (1945-2018), purchased 1970s.
This substantial Roman gold ring, dating to the 2nd–3rd century A.D., is notable for its impressive
weight and architectural form. The boldly faceted hoop frames a finely banded agate, prized in antiquity
for its natural stratification and subtle chromatic rhythm. Unlike engraved signet rings, the uncarved
stone emphasises material beauty over heraldic function. Its mass and clarity of design suggest
ownership within the Roman elite.
