flyleaves 216mm x 145mm, text complete
written in black ink in a very skilful rounded calligraphic mainly
gothic hand, some hairline flourishes and cadels, rubrics in red,
capitals touched in yellow, illuminated initials and line-fillers
throughout
72 full broad illuminated borders of which 42 form full-page
pictorial schemes enclosing the text
51 very large miniatures within full broad borders
illustrated with 93 miniatures including 43 half-page miniatures
by Simon Bening
old (perhaps mid-eighteenth century Dutch) bright orange-red velvet over pasteboards, 4
elaborately chased dutch gold clasps and catches in fine baroque designs with figures of the
Evangelists on the catches and three figures of Moses and one of Zacharias on the clasps, one pair
of clasps made in 1758 and the other in the mid-nineteenth century (see below), edges nap partly
worn on edges and spines but mostly bright and unfaded, in fitted cases of full bright red morocco
