AGNESE DOLCI
Florence 1635 - 1686
The Christ Child;
The Infant Saint John the Baptist
both oil and gold on copper
each: 12 cm x 8.5 cm.
PROVENANCE
Private collection, Italy.
The two companion ovals are part of the rich catalogue of works by Agnese Dolci, daughter and
student of the celebrated Carlino, the champion of technical virtuosity and protagonist of midseventeenth-century Florenceās religious and devotional painting. Raised and trained in her father's
studio, Agnese was able to infuse her father's models, as our examples also demonstrate, with a
feminine, sentimental touch. The children portrayed in the ovals, Jesus and Saint John the Baptist,
reveal an unusual tenderness and humanity and it is only the effect of the enameled paint surface
which re-transports them to an otherworldly dimension.
